Artist Statement:
A native of Quincy Illinois, I grew up on the Mississippi where my love of nature grew along the river’s edge. As the seasons changed, I explored my surroundings and developed a love for the colors, textures, and patterns found in nature. Earth and sky gifted me a profound appreciation for a beautiful sunset seen from the high bluffs overlooking the River, the patterns and textures of the lush farmlands along the bottoms, and the joys of collecting rocks and geodes from creek beds.
My ceramic pieces are inspired by nature and by my love of texture. Along with wheel throwing, I love to play with coil work; often combining the two processes.
I explore various clay bodies, whether it be rich, red clay, speckled textured clay, or porcelain. Although porcelain has its many challenges, it is truly my choice above all.
I love experimentation and spontaneity, but I also have a respect for classical forms. Pushing the envelope keeps me inspired and challenged. Working with paper clay has allowed me to push some of my pieces to another level.
I create both art and utilitarian pieces and I try to make them all special and one-of-a-kind in some way.
