In the late 1960’s I became fascinated with the large Nuoc Mam pots of the Mekong Delta…..brown and heavy, sitting stoically in the hot sun, brewing their pungent fish sauce. Later, at Northwest Missouri State University, I was exposed to the bold clay work of professor Russ Schmaljohn and the beefy storage vessels of the likes of Bernard Leach and Ken Ferguson. The solid foundations and strong shoulders of those potters’ work provided solace at a time our country was rife with unrest and uncertainty. A career in pottery was unavoidable. I will continue to make pots that stand on their own and demand space.
